Star Citizen looks to be the biggest space odyssey out of them all. It looks to bring you a truly open-ended sandbox, a universe driven by its players. With absolutely stunning visuals to delight in as you engage in space combat and FPS gameplay on land, Star Citizen is not only a fantastic MMO, but it will also have an absorbing story-driven single-player campaign. With more money accumulated than all the games combined on Kickstarter in 2017, it definitely has the funds to turn into an adventure like you’ve never seen before.

Avorion is an immersive sandbox that lets you explore and basically do anything you wish in its procedurally-generated galaxy either alone or with friends. You’ll come across plenty of unique factions as you use the great freedom that this sci-fi title offers to build your own ships and space stations. Create your own fleet as you recruit captains to operate your diverse set of ships as you uncover various resources throughout space. Trade and even take part in many wars between factions or build up your own empire. There are so many things you can do, so if you’re looking for a title with huge amounts of freedom in gameplay to jump into alone or with friends, then Avorion is a superb space sim that certainly doesn’t disappoint.

Blow up space pirates and interact with aliens as you shape your story in a stunning randomly-generated universe. Discover many secrets and enjoy the simple but fun sci-fi action. It’s definitely not as complex of a title like Elite: Dangerous as movement in Rebel Galaxy is limited to horizontal 2D movement rather than full 6DoF. But that doesn’t make your space adventure any less enjoyable, so if you’re looking for a simpler single-player space venture, then Rebel Galaxy is one worth taking a look at.

It may look dated visually, but this single-player focused experience with the option of multiplayer is full of depth and packed with features that give you tons of things to do. With great freeform gameplay and a universe with no loading screens to disrupt your immersion, you’ll get to build ships, space stations for new trade routes, mine, spy, race, trade. If you’re looking for a space sandbox that doesn’t require you to play online, then Evochron Mercenary might be the game you’re looking for.

Don’t be fooled by its visual style, as Rodina is an atmospheric space journey you might really like.

Explore many solar systems as you use an in-depth trading system with hundreds of different goods to trade with and progress through the story-driven campaign. Mine asteroids and take down space pirates with a variety of different customizable ships. Whether on your mobile device or PC, Galaxy on Fire 2 is an enjoyable sci-fi adventure worth checking out.

This space MOBA has you battling it out for control of space stations across sectors as you try and reach the opposing team’s home base in the tactical 5v5 Conquest mode. Ships are designed to suit specific roles and you also get to hire crew members which give various bonuses to your ship. Next to Conquest mode you also get to survive waves of enemy ships in the Last Stand 3-player mode. If you’re looking for strategic space battles, Fractured Space is the complex free game to go for.

Everspace may not be a gigantic online game to experience with friends, but it is an excellent single-player rouge-like with detailed vibrant visuals. It has you making your way through beautiful procedurally-generated levels full of different situations to tackle and tough decisions to make. As you craft, mine and engage in great fast-paced space action, you also get to collect credits used for upgrading your ship. Every time you die, you get to use these credits as well as blueprints you’ve found to upgrade your ship and level up various perks, making your detailed ship stronger for your next adventure. If you like single-player focused experiences, then Everspace is a space shooter you have to check out.

This space MMO not only lets you enjoy fast-paced PvP and PvE battles across a variety of different game modes, but it also lets you explore its many systems and sectors connected by warp gates. The freedom that this part of the game allows called ‘Open Space’ not only lets you fight ships from various factions, but you can also shoot down other players. There are also PvE missions you can complete depending on your ship rank. With tons of ships to buy and various components to upgrade, Star Conflict is a fun free-to-play action-packed MMO that’s worth trying out.
